The Republican’s push to get Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court is a slap in the face to any American who believes that the Supreme Court should consist of exceptional justices, not just partisan hacks who perjure themselves and lie throughout their hearings. That being said, it was always a long shot that the Democrats would be able to stop Kavanaugh’s nomination. In our hyper-partisan political environment, majorities provide the only power, and the Democrats don’t have majorities in neither the house or the Senate.
All this could change on November 6th when every House member is up for re-election and 35 Senate seats are in play. Here are the things that you can do to make your voice heard.
- Register to Vote – If you are registered to vote, or haven’t checked on the current status of your registration, you can do this https://vote.gov
- Vote- This should go without saying, but make sure you have Tuesday November 6 marked on your calendar. If you are going to be busy at work, you want to request an absentee ballot.
- Make sure your friends are registered, and make sure they get themselves to the polls on Nov. 6th.
- If you have some extra money, consider making some donations to Democratic campaigns. You can do your own research using https://fivethirtyeight.com to find close races where you can get the most bang for your buck out of your dollars.
- Volunteer for Swift Left, a national grassroots organization of volunteers supporting Democratic candidates in order to flip the House in 2018. http://swingleft.org
I would also recommend checking out Chris Saccas’s blog post which has a much longer list of ways to help us save our Democracy. https://chrissacca.com/2018/10/democracy/
Try not to get despondent and keep your eye on the prize. A majority in the house will give Democrats Subpoena power and the ability to stop harmful legislation. A majority in the Senate will give Democrats the ability to stop bad judicial nominations, including future Supreme court justices. Get to work!
